Ensemble idea

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Been thinking - I reckon we can get together the following instruments:

  • 2 Descant Recorders
  • Harmonica
  • 2 Bb clarinets
  • 4 Alto Saxes
  • Oboe
  • Bagpipes
  • Accordian
  • Harpsichord

They could improvise long notes over a held G7 chord. Oboe playing the concert A, of course.

I’ve put together a quick MP3 of what it might sound like:

1 track!

lying in bed thinking about the album. my brain has already started to piece it together even though we haven’t finished writing it yet! realised all the tracks morph into each other in some way or another. think the album might turn out to be 1 track! - aaarrgghhh prog! are we ‘doing a mew’?! (as it’s known in the industry!)

brass and strings

going to start scoring a mega brass chorus for ‘four cycles’. do we know where the final chorus vocals are going to stop? (coz i think that’s where the brass are going to start

‘open your heart’ - will get a few ideas going for string lines.

last thing: the form/ending for ‘contradiction’ is now finalised isn’t it? (need to structure the guitar part)

From Jim via text:
“Think we could have a big sweeping strings line in the chorus. Full on ‘everything must go’ string epic euphoria! Also…maybe it could be a [DELETED].”

I like the idea of that. It definitely needs something to make it a stand-out track. Unfortunately, because of the looped chords, it requires extra things to hold interest. I had the thought of stealing some other chords from one of our reject tunes - I have a wealth of them! - for a mid-section, like Cloud7. Not sure though; what do you chaps think?

On the subject of [DELETED], we were going to add [DELETED] to the bridge of Contradiction, just to make it even darker. Is that still on the cards?

This isn’t so much a blog post, more a series of questions. Sorry about that!

Rob.
