6 Music photos and listen again

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Thanks to everyone for you wonderful comments about our live performance on BBC 6 Music last night!

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and want to thank Tom Robinson for inviting us along and being happy-friendly-good to us.

If you missed the show, you can listen again via the BBC iPlayer, which is available to anyone with a computer and internet access (much like us) for the next 7 days.

Tom very kindly took some photos of us playing and I’ve uploaded some of the best for your amusement:

Glow live on BBC 6 Music!

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Some very exciting news for all you Glow fans (and indeed us!)

This Tuesday (4th March) we’re off to London to play LIVE on Tom Robinson’s BBC 6 Music show.

The show goes out between 19:00 - 21:30 and is available on DAB, Freeview/Sky/Virgin and on the web here.

We’ll be in the studio performing some of our favourite tracks. We haven’t decided which yet, although we do have a shortlist, so if there is any track you’d really like to hear, let us know in the comments!

Tom played Your Turn again on his Monday night show and said nice things about it, which was lovely.

Anyway, tune in on Tuesday night to catch us quite possibly destroying perfectly good songs through fear :-)

Recording guitar for ‘Borderline’

Monday, February 25th, 2008

A sneek preview of ‘Borderline’, from our upcoming album.
Ben and Jim lay down a guitar part for the track, which is a VERY early version with just chords as a guide.

Want to sing on our album?

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

We’re looking for volunteers to sing on one of our tracks. It’s gonna be a massive chorus with as many of our friends and fellow musicians singing on it as possible.

So far, we’ve already got a fair number of voices, but we want MORE!

If you’re interested, simply e-mail us at fourchoircles@fablesofglow.com and we’ll send you two small .mp3 tracks of the section to be recorded (one with guide vocals, one without).

What you will need:

  • A method of recording to your computer, or of transferring recorded material to your computer
  • A half-decent mic
  • The ability to sing (optional)

The part will ideally be recorded in high quality .wav format and returned to us using a file-sending service such as yousendit.com

Reckon you’re up to it? Go on, give it a try!

Recording vocals for Open Your Heart

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

This weekend, we were back in the Studio, recording vocals for album track ‘Open Your Heart’.
It’s a duet with Ben and Helen Andrews (pictured).

Huge thanks to Helen for singing and being on our album!

Back in the studio

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

After a whole month out of the studio, we spent a few hours yesterday recording some vocals and taking silly photos [that was mostly me - Rob].

Here’s a selection of the pics we took…

unfortunately we didn’t get any proper photos of the brass recording (or even get a photo of everyone who played!)……t’was a bit too hectic for photography ….. sorry about that.

Brass

Monday, August 6th, 2007

Yesterday, we travelled to Cwmbran Brass Band Hall in South Wales to record our eight-piece brass ensemble parts.

It was like a mini re-union, as we got together people from school and uni, and boy did it sound good!

Everyone was a complete star; very accomodating and helpful, which was nice :-) We really enjoyed the day, although we were exhausted by the end of it.

Jim played trumpet, I played Flugel and Ben conducted! It was*very* warm in the band hall, as the sun was beating down and (obviously) we couldn’t have any windows open. Still, it helped me keep the Flugel in tune; the cold really plays havoc with brass instrument tuning.

I haven’t played any horn for quite a while, so I had to spend the couple of weeks before practising to ensure my lips were up to the job. It was a good experience playing in an ensemble like that again. Reminded me a little of my old brass-banding years - only this time with pro musicians and music written by us!

Poor Ben had to conduct us with a click track in his ears.  It started off that he was conducting  along to the actual track on headphones, but he soon realised that brass groups play just behind the conductor. This meant that we were always behind the track - very distracting for Ben…

After we figured that out, it all worked ok and we got some amazing parts down.  A quick listen back confirmed that the mics we’d borrowed from a friend (thanks, Thom!) were perfect for the job. Superb clarity and a real sense of space.

Now we’ve just got to find a space in the mix for the extra sounds. He he!

Rob.
